Flu vs. Colds: A Guide to Symptoms
Questions Flu Cold
Was the onset of illness … sudden? slow?
Does your child have a … high fever? no (or mild) fever?
Is your child’s exhaustion level … severe? mild?
Is your child’s head … achy? headache-free?
Is your child’s appetite … decreased? normal?
Are your child’s muscles … achy? fine?
Does your child have … chills? no chills?

Well we have half of the symptoms of one and half of the other. So we have a virus of sorts, maybe the flu or maybe not. Mild symptoms mean a strong immune system so hooray for that.

Phoebe has an ear infection and maybe croup. So another sick weekend for us I am afraid and maybe no school until Tuesday for the girls, we shall see. Here is to hoping Mommy and Daddy steer mostly clear of this thing and Landi too:)

In a nutshell we are doing pretty good for the shape we are in and could definitely be doing worse:)

Still sick

Well the 3 are still sick, yes still sick! Can you believe it. This is like the never ending fever and I am finally at my patience limit. So I am hauling all the kids to the pediatrician today just to make sure it isn’t something else and that I haven’t totally lost it over the weekend worrying about the phamtom fever. The girls are now stuffy but not in any bad way just the usual runny nose, dry cough way. I called the ped and she suggested it could be the flu but for real, if this is the flu it is the mildest flu I have ever heard of.

So stay tuned, I am sure that when I get back I will be able to post that it is nothing but a fever. They have missed a whole week of school too and Piper and Lela both still had the fever this morning, at this rate we could be out all month, lol!

Next Generation Diaper Service

Sigh…..

My cloth diaper service is closing its door unexpectedly this weekend! I am so totally bummed. I had planned to use the service for at least a year which is up in Feb so I almost made it but the bigger bummer is that I had planned to just use them the whole diapering time. So bummed. I still have cloth AIOs and pockets that I could use but I really really really liked having someone else wash them for me. I mean some weeks I can barely get all of our clothes cleaned so adding in diapers that have to be sanitized might be a stretch. What to do what to do, environment and better for baby or convenience, gah!

Another one bites the dust

Well the girls went to a birthday party this weekend and left with a gift. So far it is the gift that keeps on giving and the giving is in the form of a 102+ fever. Woot! So we are officially the sick house. The only child not struck with high fevers is Landis but I am sure she is going to come crashing down to earth soon.

Piper is over the worst of it I think but Lela is all up in the throes of misery with her fever today. Phoebe started at about 1AM last night with her fever. Ahhhh……life in a big family that shares:)

The same phantom fever has struck about 7 of their classmates this week. Eek gads this thing has legs.

6 year stats

We went to the doctor a couple weeks ago for our 6 year check ups. They did get one booster shot and it went fairly well. Lela was pretty freaked but she calmed down. They had their eyes checked and Piper had a little difficulty. We had her eyes checked at an optometrist and she does have glasses for now. The glasses might correct the problem so it isn’t for sure that she will have to wear them permanently, she does look darn cute in them though.

So on to the stats:

Lela
Weight 44 lbs
Height 45.5 inches

Piper
Weight 39 lbs
Height 42.5 inches

About the same as always, a few more pounds and inches for Lela but other wise still holding strong in the healthy department!

My friend Julie

Landis has an imaginary friend. In addition to telling the longest stories ever told by a 3 year old, and I am not kidding they go on forEVER, she has a BFF that apparently lives with us. Even though Julie lives with us we often spot her mother driving a car on the freeway. HA! She has been around for a few months off and on, right now it is more off than on but I am not sure she is totally gone. Landis is very content to be doing her own thing and having her own conversation (probably with Julie) about 30 percent of the time. She is in this read me a book phase and that takes up about 40 percent of her time (and yours) and then the rest of the time she is happily following or playing with her sisters both older and younger. She really is a gem, gets away with murder, sleeps in our bed literally on top of Jason, tells knock knock jokes, LOVES all things minty, is a bit of a princess and a DIVA and is an all around ham. She brings so much laughter to our days I can’t imagine life without her and Julie:)

Birthday at school

We celebrated the girls birthday at school. It was a really special day. The whole family was invited to spend the morning with the girls at the school. We all got ready and went together, it was a chilly morning so I bundled up Landis and wore Phoebe in the Ergo. When we got there we dropped off the girls and the freshly chopped fruit we brought for snack. Then we spent about an hour or more outside enjoying the crisp morning and watching the kids play. They did their movement exercises greeting the day which was cool to be a part of, they have a greeting that they say to the sun, the day, their friends etc. it was a nice ritual. Then there was more playing.

After the morning greeting the teacher assigned tasks table setter and hand washer. Those children have to come in during play time to do their tasks. After more playing it was time for hand washing and circle time. The kids all line up, change their sneakers for slippers and wash their hands in a basin, a fellow student dries each of their hands. Then we all went in side.

The class all sat in a circle around a beautiful little table. On the table were two bees wax candles (made by me at a parent morning), two cakes, two cards and two gifts. Then the magic began. Ms. Susan started to tell a story about angels in heaven and what it was like to be an angel in heaven. The story goes on about a wall and a hole in that wall and the two angels that looked through the wall to the other side (the earth bound side). The little angels told their guardian that they wanted to have a family and go to the other side, it is then that their guardian began to look for the perfect family for the angels. The story goes on and eventually the angels make it to earth to their family. At this point I was asked to tell the girls birth story. The story that Ms. Susan told was so sweet and even though the kids hear it every birthday they were enraptured with the story and her storytelling. It was really wonderful. After the birth story the girls got to go around the class and show them things from their birth, blankets, pictures of them in the NICU, their first outfit etc. The girls had picked out what they wanted to bring from things I have saved. Oh the kids were so excited to see their pictures and things, lots of oooh and ahhing and “is that really you,” or “which one is you.”

After the show and tell was over it was time for the cake. The candles were lit (both on the cake and the beeswax ones) and the girls got to blow them out. Then all the children started singing “smoke fairies come to me.” Since candles are used every day in their class they have learned that if they sit in their chairs the smoke fairies will come to them but if they get up and approach the candles the fairies will go away. The kids believe this within their hearts and all sit and beckon the smoke fairies to them.

After this the girls got to open their gifts and read their cards from the teacher. They also received their cards from each student and we read them all aloud, so cute. They each had a birthday wish for each of the girls and they were a crack up.

Then the class got ready for snack. Everyone washes their hands and sits at their seat (the chairs have their symbols on them and they are moved every day). Then it is quiet time while the quiet candle is lit, they bless the snack and thank their teacher for making the food. Then the teachers serve each of the children asking them what they want. On this day it was barley and kale with sunflower seeds and soy sauce. After all the children are served they blow out the quiet candle and the kids can talk. Then it was time for cake, cream that the kids had whipped earlier and fresh fruit. Lela had 4 servings of cake and the kids were all thrilled that there were two cakes. The cake itself was more like a sweet bread than an actual cake. Then it was time to clean up and the kids went to their chores, composter collected all scraps, dish washers, dish dryers, table clearer and floor sweeper.

Then the class had free play, that was a real treasure to watch. Ms. Susan started to make bread and several of the children (including Piper, Lela and Landis) all drifted over to her and started to make bread. She sang to them and they kneaded their dough and made rolls. She never announces what she is doing she just does it and the kids seem to find their way to the activities that interest them. About this time Phoebe was getting too tired to stay so Landis and I left and came back to pick up the girls about 40 minutes later.

It really was a wonderful day and I feel so lucky to have found this school and the girls teachers. I only hope they keep some of this day in their memory even if it doesn’t resurface until they read this blog years from now.

Happy 6th Birthday little cherubs:)

You need to clean your room

Yes, I need to clean my room according to Piper. One of the things that I love about our new house is our huge bedroom. I think I like it because there is room for us all in there at any time of the day and since I am never alone it is nice that we all fit in my bedroom (easier than keeping them out I tell ya). Anyway, the girls are often found playing in my room and I have a basket for toys in there so when they come in all hells bells and romp around I can quickly put their toys in a basket to keep my room tidy.

So yesterday the girls were playing in my room. Later I came in to do something in the bathroom (put clothes away I think) and Piper made a loud yowling sound from my bedroom. I peeked around the corner and she was sitting on the floor holding her foot. She proceeded to tell me how she had stepped on a screw, she held it up and it was a 3 inch long and 2 inch wide screw and bolt from Melissa and Doug. She looked at me exasperated and said, “Mom I stepped on this, YOU need to clean your room.”

Really??
